Kargakala Peak

Duration: 1–2 hours

Kargakala is a 622-meter peak rising just above Sololaki and the old city of Tbilisi. It offers quiet trails, city panoramas, and a quick escape from the streets below without leaving the capital.

Why Visit Kargakala & What to Expect

Kargakala is not a developed attraction, it is a natural viewpoint on the ridge south of Mtatsminda. From the top you get open views over the Mtkvari valley, Narikala, the Mother of Georgia statue, and the red-tile roofs of Sololaki and Kala. The atmosphere is calm, with pine and scrub, rock outcrops, and informal footpaths used by locals for short walks and photography.

Expect a short hike rather than a long trek. The summit area is unmarked and natural, with no facilities, which makes it feel more like a neighborhood hill than a tourist site.

Trail Details & Natural Wonders

  • Elevation: 622 m
  • Terrain: dry grass, low shrubs, exposed rock and earth paths
  • Distance: 2–4 km round trip depending on start point
  • Time: 1–2 hours at a relaxed pace

The most pleasant approach is from the upper streets of Sololaki or from the road leading toward Kharpukhi. Paths are informal but follow the ridge line. In spring the slopes are green with wildflowers, in autumn the light is soft and the city air is clearer. Birds of prey can often be seen circling above the ridge.

How to Get There & Road Conditions

The peak sits within city limits, so access is by car to the upper Sololaki streets, then on foot.

  • By car: Narrow, steep residential streets with cobblestone and asphalt sections. A regular sedan can reach the lower trailheads in dry weather, but the final turns are tight and parking is limited. Drive slowly and park where you do not block driveways.
  • On foot: The most rewarding way is a direct hike from Sololaki. The climb is steady, with some steep earth sections that can be slippery after rain. Hiking shoes are recommended.

No 4x4 is required. Road quality is urban, not mountain.

Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit

  • Best seasons: spring and autumn for mild temperatures and clear views. Summer mornings and late afternoons are also good; bring water and sun protection. Winter is possible on dry days, but paths can be muddy.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sturdy shoes. There are no shops on the ridge.
  • Stay on existing paths to avoid erosion.
  • Visit at golden hour for photography over the old town.
  • Mobile signal is good, but there are no benches or bins. Take litter back with you.
