The Tbilisi Juma Mosque stands prominently above the historic Abanotubani sulfur bath district, showcasing a distinctive red-brick facade and an octagonal minaret. Positioned along the narrow botanical street that climbs toward the old fortress slopes, this Islamic house of worship is highly unusual for its blending of styles and its structural resilience. The Evolution of the Sanctuary

The origins of Islamic worship on this specific hillside date back to the 1700s, when Ottoman authorities established a mosque near the hot thermal springs. This initial building faced destruction and reconstruction across shifting periods of Persian and Russian Imperial governance. The building standing today took its shape in 1911 through major reconstruction efforts that introduced an eclectic architectural approach. Builders combined classic Islamic geometric patterns with distinct Neo-Gothic design elements, particularly visible in the arched window frames and the vertical lines of the exterior walls.

Architectural Syncretism and Cultural Legacy

The true historical importance of the site lies in its interior layout and community role. Following the demolition of the nearby Shiite Blue Mosque by Soviet authorities in 1951, the Juma Mosque became the primary gathering point for the city's entire Muslim population. To accommodate everyone, a special internal divider was utilized to allow Sunni and Shia communities to pray together under one roof. Though the physical barrier was removed in the late 20th century, the shared usage continues today, making it a rare example of peaceful co-worship globally. Inside, the walls are decorated with elegant blue-green tile work and painted floral motifs that mirror Persian influences, while the exterior design allows the building to blend naturally with the surrounding timber-balconied residential houses.
