Gveleti Waterfalls
Gveleti is widely recognized not for a lake, as the name might misleadingly suggest, but for its iconic twin waterfalls located in the dramatic Dariali Gorge. Situated near the village of Gveleti, just a short drive from Stepantsminda, this location serves as a perfect stopover for those traveling toward the Russian border or exploring the vast landscapes of the Kazbegi National Park. The geography of the region is defined by the steep, rugged cliffs of the Greater Caucasus, which create a formidable backdrop for these powerful cascades, carved naturally into the basalt rock.
Hiking to the Waterfalls
To reach the waterfalls, you must undertake a moderate hike starting directly from the main road. The trail is approximately 700–800 meters long, but the steady elevation gain requires a bit of stamina. It takes about 20–30 minutes of walking to reach the base of the larger waterfall. The path is often narrow and covered with loose stones, so sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking shoes are non-negotiable. As you climb, the roar of the water becomes increasingly prominent, effectively drowning out the distant hum of traffic from the highway below. The primary viewpoint provides a direct look at the water plummeting from the high, dark cliffs.
Local Tips and Observations
The best time to visit is late spring or early summer when the snowmelt makes the waterfalls particularly thunderous and impressive. During the peak of summer, the flow might decrease slightly, but the cool mist remains a welcome relief. While many tourists stop only at the larger, lower waterfall, those seeking a more serene experience should continue along the trail toward the smaller, hidden upper cascade.
Keep in mind that the mountain weather is fickle; even on a sunny day, the temperature can drop rapidly once the sun hides behind the massive peaks. Packing a light windbreaker is a wise decision regardless of the forecast. If you are planning an extended trip in the area, consider exploring the nearby Devdoraki Glacier trail or visit the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, which is about a 20-minute drive away. Parking is very limited near the trailhead, so arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to avoid congestion and ensure a peaceful hike.
