Grigol Peradze House-Museum

The house-museum of Saint Grigol Peradze stands in the village of Bakurtsikhe, within the Gurjaani Municipality of Kakheti. This cultural site preserves the memory of one of the most remarkable Georgian theologians, historians, and philologists of the 20th century. Archimandrite Grigol Peradze was a man of profound intellectual depth who dedicated his life to European academia and the recovery of ancient Georgian manuscripts. He was canonized by the Georgian Orthodox Church as a holy martyr after sacrificing his own life in the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II to save a fellow prisoner.

The Legacy of Grigol Peradze

Born in 1899 to a priestly family in Bakurtsikhe, Grigol Peradze grew up surrounded by the rural landscapes of Eastern Georgia. He went on to study in Tbilisi, Berlin, and Paris, eventually obtaining his doctorate at the University of Bonn. As a scholar, he discovered and translated numerous ancient Christian texts, shedding light on early Georgian literature for the Western academic world. In 1931, he took monastic vows and served the Georgian diaspora in Europe, lecturing at the University of Warsaw as a professor of patrology. His life took a tragic yet heroic turn during the Nazi occupation of Poland, where his humanitarian convictions led to his arrest and ultimate martyrdom.

The Memorial House and Collection

The museum occupies the traditional, single-story Kakhetian residence where the Peradze family lived. Built with classic regional architecture, the house reflects the modest, intellectual lifestyle of a late 19th-century provincial clergyman's family. Inside, the exhibition features rare personal items, original archival photographs, copies of his theological publications, and personal letters documenting his academic life across Germany, France, and Poland. The surrounding courtyard offers a quiet, contemplative space shaded by mature trees, mirroring the peaceful atmosphere of his childhood before his global journey began.
