Eklesiis Nashti Fortified Church Ruins
The Kvemo Kartli region contains numerous medieval structures where spiritual life and military defense intersected. Among these is the fortified complex known locally as Eklesiis Nashti (literally translating to "Church Ruins"). Located south of Tbilisi in the rugged hills of the Tetritskaro municipality, this site features a defensive wall enclosing an early medieval hall church, reflecting an era when small rural communities required heavily fortified structures to withstand sudden foreign incursions and regional conflicts.
Architecture and Military Integration
The complex demonstrates how medieval Georgian builders integrated defensive masonry with religious structures. The enclosing fortress wall is constructed from large, roughly split local basalt and limestone fieldstones bound with thick lime mortar. This barrier was designed to provide a temporary refuge for local villagers during raids. Inside the perimeter stands the primary hall church, which exhibits typical structural characteristics of Georgian ecclesiastical architecture from the 8th to 10th centuries. The walls are exceptionally thick, minimizing window openings to maintaining structural integrity under siege while serving as a secondary defensive redoubt.
Historical Context of Kvemo Kartli Borderlands
Throughout the Middle Ages, the Kvemo Kartli borderlands formed a primary defensive buffer zone protecting the royal capital of Tbilisi and the inner Georgian kingdoms from southern invasions. Because regular armies could not defend every valley, local monastic communities and regional lords constructed fortified outposts like Eklesiis Nashti to maintain watch over local mountain tracks. Over centuries of shifting administrative borders, abandonment, and natural weathering, the vaults of the church collapsed, leaving the heavy perimeter walls and the lower structural courses of the church exposed to the elements, surrounded today by dense natural vegetation.
