Old Gavazi Virgin Mary Church

Duration: 1 hour

The Old Gavazi Virgin Mary Church, located near the modern village of Akhalsopeli (historically known as Gavazi) in the Kvareli Municipality, is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant christian monuments in eastern Georgia. Standing in the fertile Alazani Valley, this ancient site represents an early stage of religious building traditions in Kakheti. It offers an authentic look into the regional developments of late antiquity, far away from the standard tourist crowds.

Evolution of the Three-Church Basilica

Built during the 5th to 6th centuries, the structure is a classic example of a three-church basilica, a distinctive architectural layout born in Georgia. Unlike standard Byzantine basilicas where naves are separated by open columns, this design uses solid stone walls to split the interior into three distinct, independent sanctuaries. The central nave is wider and taller, flanked by narrower side chapels that served specific liturgical functions. Large, carefully shaped cobblestones and limestone blocks form the foundation of the walls, showcasing early medieval masonry techniques that survived centuries of regional conflict.

Historical Context and Legacy

Gavazi was once a prominent cultural and strategic settlement in early medieval Kakheti. The church survived multiple foreign invasions, including raids that swept through the eastern borderlands. While parts of the roof and upper vaults have crumbled over time, the remaining walls and floor plan preserve the exact spatial layout used by early Christians. Today, the ruins stand within a quiet landscape, serving as an irreplaceable archive for geographers and historians studying the transition from pagan traditions to state-sanctioned Christianity in the Caucasus.
