Dinosaur Footprints in Sataplia
When most travelers picture Georgia, the mind often drifts to ancient monasteries perched on craggy peaks or vast vineyards ripening under the Caucasian sun. Dinosaurs are rarely part of that mental image. Yet, just a short drive from Kutaisi, hidden deep within the lush, temperate rainforest of the Sataplia Nature Reserve, lies one of the most fascinating paleontological finds in the Caucasus: genuine, fossilized dinosaur footprints.
Discovered in 1933 by Petre Chabukiani, a local schoolteacher with an observant eye for nature, these tracks are remarkably rare. The site is a geological jackpot because it preserves both herbivore and carnivore footprints in the same limestone layer. While these creatures didn't wander through the mud at the exact same moment, the geological conditions allowed these 120-million-year-old impressions to survive the test of time perfectly.
Today, the tracks are protected within a modern conservation pavilion. An elevated walkway allows visitors to stand just inches above the limestone, providing a clear, uninterrupted view of the massive three-toed indentations left behind during the Early Cretaceous period. It is a surreal feeling to walk over a surface that was once a primeval wetland.
More Than Just Footprints
While the prehistoric tracks are the primary reason for visiting, Sataplia offers a full morning or afternoon of exploration. A well-maintained forest trail winds through the protected Colchic forest, featuring life-sized dinosaur models along the way. While the animatronics lean into a bit of kitsch, they remain a hit with younger travelers who find the prehistoric theme park atmosphere genuinely exciting.
Further along the path, you will reach the Sataplia Cave. It is considerably more intimate than the nearby Prometheus Cave, but it possesses a unique charm. The cavern is beautifully lit, highlighting delicate flowstone formations, including a natural, heart-shaped stalagmite that has become the reserve's unofficial emblem. The walking route through the cave is flat, comfortable, and easy for visitors of all ages.
At the highest point of the reserve, you’ll find a transparent glass viewing platform extending over the cliff edge. It offers a stunning panoramic vantage point, looking out over the city of Kutaisi and the expansive Imereti region. It’s the perfect spot to pause and appreciate the scale of the landscape below.
Practical Information for Your Visit
Getting to Sataplia is straightforward. The reserve is roughly 10 kilometers northwest of Kutaisi. The most reliable way to reach it is by taxi. A round trip, including an hour or two of waiting time, typically costs between 25 and 35 GEL. Ride-sharing apps like Bolt are also fully functional in Kutaisi, though securing a return vehicle can sometimes take a little patience depending on the season.
Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours for the visit. Entrance fees are approximately 20 GEL for international visitors, while Georgian citizens enjoy a reduced rate. Always verify the opening hours before your trip, as protected areas in Georgia often observe a weekly maintenance day—typically on a Monday or Tuesday.
Insider tips: To preserve the glass viewing platform, staff will provide fabric shoe covers which you must wear to step out onto the ledge. The platform is frequently closed during heavy rain or wind for safety, so check the local forecast before you leave Kutaisi. While the forest is humid, the cave maintains a constant, cool temperature of around 14°C year-round. A light jacket is highly recommended even in the heat of summer.
Nearby Highlights
Since Sataplia is quite compact, it pairs perfectly with other regional gems. If you find yourself craving more subterranean exploration, the massive Prometheus Cave is only about 30 minutes away by car—it provides the perfect contrast to the smaller Sataplia. Bagrati Cathedral is the heart of Kutaisi and offers one of the best sunset views in the city. Finally, the Gelati and Motsameta Monasteries are essential stops for history lovers; Motsameta, in particular, is perched dramatically on a cliff edge, offering a quiet and photogenic atmosphere.
