Churiistskali

Churiistskali refers to a high-mountain territory and geographic water system located in the upper ranges of Chokhatauri and Guria, bordering the Adjarian alpine zone. Situated at an elevation of roughly 2,000 meters above sea level, this region represents a pristine example of the lesser Caucasus ecosystem. The landscape features deep valleys, seasonal wetlands, and small alpine water basins fed by glacial meltwater and natural mountain springs, defining the unique microclimate of the upper Guria ridge.

Geographic Structure and Natural Ecosystem

This high-altitude zone forms part of the watershed separating the Guria and Adjara regions. The terrain consists of extensive sub-alpine meadows and volcanic rock formations. From late June through August, the landscape transforms with diverse alpine flora, creating traditional pasturelands used by local herders for generations. Because the area remains largely undeveloped, the natural environment retains its raw, undisturbed character, preserving native plant species and fragile high-altitude ecosystems.

Cultural Heritage and Regional Context

Historically, the Churiistskali area served as a crucial summer migration route for pastoralists moving livestock between regions. The surrounding high ground offers broad panoramic views across the Guria hills and the distant Meskheti range. The isolation of the terrain helped preserve ancient oral traditions and local geographical naming conventions, linking the mountain peaks to the historical communities living in the river valleys below.
