Chokismta-Matura

Duration: 1–3 hours hiking, half day with drive

Chokismta-Matura is a 3,170-meter peak in Khevsureti, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, standing above the hamlet of Lebaiskari and the village of Khakhmati. The ridge offers wide panoramic views across the Greater Caucasus, quiet alpine meadows and a raw high-mountain setting far from busy trails.

Why Visit Chokismta-Matura & What to Expect

The peak is valued for its open horizon, clean air and sense of isolation. From the top you can see neighboring ridges, the Chanchakhi Pass area and, on clear days, distant snow-covered summits of the Greater Caucasus. The landscape is typical high-alpine: short grass, rocky outcrops and seasonal wildflowers. Expect strong wind, rapid weather changes and no facilities at the summit.

Trail Details & Natural Wonders

The approach follows shepherd paths and grassy slopes rather than a marked trail. The climb is physically easy to moderate, with a steady gain and no technical sections in summer. Key natural features include:

  • Alpine meadows in full bloom in June-July
  • Rocky crest with 360-degree views
  • Views toward Khakhmatismta and Chanchakhi Pass
  • Quiet pastures historically used for summer grazing

How to Get There & Road Conditions

Access is from the Shatili road corridor via Khakhmati and Lebaiskari. The final mountain road is gravel and uneven, with stream crossings and steep sections after rain. A 4x4 is strongly recommended; a sedan can reach lower villages only in dry weather. From the road end, the hike to the ridge takes 1-3 hours depending on start point. Hiking is the only way to reach the summit itself.

Practical Travel Tips & Best Season to Visit

Best season is late June to early October. Snow can linger until June and return in October. Carry sturdy footwear, windproof layers, sun protection, and 2+ liters of water per person. There is no shop, water source or shelter on the ridge. Start early to avoid afternoon clouds and storms. Mobile signal is unreliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a 4x4 to reach the trailhead?

Yes for the upper track to Lebaiskari/Khakhmati. The road is rough gravel with ruts and loose stones. In dry summer a high-clearance vehicle may manage, but a 4x4 is safer.

Is the hike suitable for beginners?

In good weather the route is non-technical and good for fit beginners. Navigation is by visible ridge and shepherd paths; fog can make orientation harder.

Is there water on the route?

No reliable sources on the crest. Fill up in the villages below and carry enough for the whole outing.
