Chkhoria Neighborhood in Zugdidi

Duration: 1–2 hours

Situated just northeast of Zugdidi's central core, Chkhoria is a historical village and distinctive neighborhood that embodies the rural soul and architectural traditions of the Samegrelo region. Unlike the manicured grounds of the nearby Dadiani estate, this area preserves the layout of a classic Megrelian settlement, where expansive homesteads merge into a landscape of hazelnut orchards, cornfields, and private vineyards. It offers an unhurried, authentic look at the lifestyle of Western Georgia, where communal identity remains closely tied to the surrounding fertile lowlands.

The Agrarian Roots of Samegrelo

Historically, Chkhoria developed as an agricultural community on the periphery of Zugdidi, serving as a vital link between the urban administrative center and the wider Megrelian countryside. The neighborhood's identity is shaped by the Oda—the traditional wooden house of Western Georgia. These structures are elevated on stone or wooden stilts to protect against valley dampness, featuring wide, covered balconies with intricate woodwork where families gather. Walking through the lanes of Chkhoria reveals how modern life still accommodates these older architectural rhythms, with spacious courtyards (ezo) acting as the central hub for domestic life and seasonal harvests.

Geographic Setting and Regional Significance

The geography of Chkhoria is defined by its flat, alluvial plains, typical of the Colchis lowlands, combined with a humid subtropical climate that fosters exceptionally lush vegetation. This fertile terrain made the area a backbone for regional agriculture, particularly for growing tea, citrus, and historical varieties of local grapes like Oghaleshi. The spatial arrangement of the neighborhood reflects ancient Megrelian land use, where homesteads are intentionally spread out rather than tightly clustered, preserving a sense of open, rural space within the expanding borders of the municipality.
