Cheremi Lake

Duration: 1–3 hours

Situated within the historic landscape of the village of Cheremi in the Gurjaani Municipality, this location blends natural stillness with ancient cultural layers. While often described simply as a lake, the site is defined by the archaeological remains of the ancient city of Cheremi, a prominent political and ecclesiastical hub during the era of the kingdom of Hereti.

The Historical Legacy of Cheremi

Records suggest that King Vakhtang Gorgasali founded the city and established an episcopal see here in the 5th century. The surrounding terrain still holds the structural imprints of that period, including segments of defensive stone walls and foundations of religious buildings. The water basin provides a calm, reflective backdrop to these weathered ruins, emphasizing the long-term human connection to this specific point in the Alazani Valley.

Archaeology and Geography

Explorations here focus on the intersection of the basilica ruins and the surrounding topography. Unlike managed heritage sites, this area remains in a raw, quiet state, allowing visitors to walk through the remains of an urban center that once held significant regional power. Because the terrain is uneven and rugged, durable footwear is required to safely navigate the paths leading from the water's edge to the historical remnants on the hillside.
