Berdiki (Poladauri) Fortress

The remnants of Berdiki Fortress, also widely known as Poladauri Fortress, stand on a rocky spur overlooking the dense forests of the Kvemo Kartli region. Situated above the waters of the Poladauri River, this medieval defensive outpost remains entirely untouched by mass tourism. The fortification wall blends directly into the natural basalt and limestone cliffs, creating a stark silhouette against the deep gorge below. Visitors to the site encounter an atmospheric ruin where nature has gradually reclaimed the old stone walls, leaving a peaceful environment dominated only by the sound of the wind and the rushing mountain river.

The Strategic Importance of the Poladauri Gorge

Historically, the southern reaches of Georgia formed a vulnerable frontier zone that bore the brunt of foreign invasions. To secure the realm, regional rulers constructed a dense network of fortifications along major trade and military corridors. Berdiki Fortress was built specifically to control access through the Poladauri Gorge, monitoring movements along a vital river valley route that connected the hinterlands of Georgia with neighboring territories.

Architecturally, the fortification demonstrates the classic engineering principles of medieval Georgian military architecture. Rather than modifying the landscape, the builders utilized the rugged topography to maximize defensive capabilities:

• Bedrock Integration: The base of the primary stone curtain walls attaches directly to the sheer cliffs, making a direct assault virtually impossible from the valley floor.
• Defensive Towers: The structural layout featured multi-tiered defensive towers designed to provide clear lines of sight across the entire gorge.
• Local Materials: The masonry consists primarily of roughly split local fieldstone and lime mortar, allowing the structure to endure centuries of exposure to the elements.

Today, while major sections of the vaults and upper defensive battlements have collapsed, the surviving foundations, lower walls, and tower segments provide a clear picture of the defensive complex that once guarded this ancient route.
