Aleura River

The Aleura River is a relatively short but vibrant mountain river located in the Akhalgori municipality of Georgia. It is a left tributary of the larger Ksani River, contributing to the broader Mtkvari (Kura) river basin. Originating on the southern slopes of the Alevi Range, the Aleura flows for approximately 21 kilometers through a scenic, V-shaped valley. The river is characterized by a steep gradient, resulting in a fast and sometimes turbulent flow, especially during the spring snowmelt and periods of heavy rainfall. The surrounding landscape is a mix of deciduous forests and alpine meadows, offering a pristine environment that is largely untouched by heavy industrial activity. The Ksani gorge, through which the Aleura flows, is steeped in Georgian history, dotted with ruins of old fortresses and ancient settlements. The river primarily feeds on snow, rain, and groundwater. While not a major destination for mainstream tourism, the Aleura valley provides excellent opportunities for off-the-beaten-path trekking and exploring the rugged beauty of the Georgian mountains.
