Totiaurni

The village of Totiaurni is located in the Dusheti Municipality, within the mountainous Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of northeastern Georgia. Situated in the historic Mtiuleti region, this small highland settlement sits at a high elevation within the Aragvi River basin, positioned close to major transit routes that cross the Caucasus Mountains.

Road Access and Connectivity

Totiaurni is reached via mountain roads branching off the main Georgian Military Highway (E117), which serves as the primary transport corridor linking Tbilisi with Stepantsminda and the Russian border. The nearest significant town centers with commercial facilities and administrative offices are Pasanauri to the south and the alpine resort area of Gudauri to the north. Travel to the village requires navigating steep unpaved mountain tracks that can become difficult or impassable during winter storms and heavy snowfall. Private four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for reliable access outside the main summer season.

Landscape and Geography

The settlement is surrounded by steep alpine slopes, deep valleys, and high mountain pastures characteristic of the Greater Caucasus range. The local climate is distinctly alpine, featuring long, cold winters with persistent snow cover and short, mild summers. The surrounding terrain is primarily used for seasonal livestock grazing, with local vegetation consisting mostly of subalpine meadows and scattered deciduous thickets along the ravines.

Many residents engage in subsistence agriculture, primarily sheep and cattle herding, alongside small-scale vegetable cultivation. The architecture consists of traditional stone dwellings and agricultural outbuildings, some of which are only occupied during the warmer agricultural months when shepherds move their flocks to high-altitude pastures.
