Shatili

Shatili serves as the primary administrative and cultural center of the historical Khevsureti region within the Dusheti Municipality. Historically, its role was defined by its strategic position on the northern border of Georgia, functioning as a defensive outpost guarding the Argun River gorge. Today, the village maintains a small permanent population, with its economy shifting toward seasonal tourism and mountain agriculture.

Geography and Access

Shatili is located in the upper reaches of the Argun River at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters. The village is surrounded by the rugged terrain of the Greater Caucasus. The primary access route is a mountain road crossing the Datvisjvari Pass (2,676 meters), which is typically restricted during winter months due to heavy snowfall. Visitors should monitor local weather conditions and road status, as vehicular travel is limited by the seasonal climate.

The Defensive Architecture

The defining feature of Shatili is its complex of medieval stone towers and houses. These structures were built into the mountain slope to serve both residential and military purposes. The architecture is characterized by flat-roofed dwellings integrated into a unified defense system, where the outer walls of the houses functioned as the outer wall of the settlement. Many of these structures remain standing, representing the traditional engineering of the Khevsureti highland people.

History and Heritage

The village has historically functioned as a community-governed defense hub. Due to its remote location, the residents developed a distinct social structure and relied on self-sufficiency. The community practiced traditional agriculture and livestock herding, which remain secondary activities for the local families today. While the historical towers are the most prominent markers of the village's past, they reflect a long history of protecting mountain passes and maintaining the cultural continuity of the region.
