Village in Dedoplistsqaro Municipality

Samtatskaro is a village located in the Dedoplistsqaro Municipality of the Kakheti region in southeastern Georgia. Situated near the border with Azerbaijan, the village functions primarily as an agricultural settlement within the lower Alazani River basin.

Economy and Administration

Agriculture and livestock farming form the economic backbone of Samtatskaro. The surrounding plains of the Dedoplistsqaro municipality are recognized as some of the most prominent grain-producing areas in Georgia. Residents primarily engage in the cultivation of wheat, barley, and sunflowers, alongside cattle and sheep breeding. The village operates within the broader local administrative framework of Dedoplistsqaro, relying on the municipal center for major commercial and governmental services, as well as connections to regional road networks.

Geography and Climate

Samtatskaro is situated in a relatively arid lowland zone typical of the extreme southeastern Georgian borderlands. The landscape is characterized by steppe-like vegetation and sweeping plains that extend toward the Alazani River, which acts as a natural border between Georgia and Azerbaijan. The climate features hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters, environmental conditions that strongly dictate the agricultural cycles and pastoral movements of the local community.

Demographics and Culture

The population of Samtatskaro has a distinct demographic history. During the late 20th century, specifically throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the village received a significant number of eco-migrants who were resettled from the mountainous Adjara region in western Georgia. This migration brought families from Khulo and other high-altitude municipalities to the eastern lowlands due to environmental hazards in their home regions. As a result, the village maintains a specific cultural profile, with residents preserving elements of their traditional mountain heritage, dialects, and religious backgrounds while completely adapting to the farming lifestyle of the Kakhetian steppes.
