Roshka

Roshka is a high-altitude mountain village situated in the Pshavi region of the Dusheti Municipality, located in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia. Positioned at the head of the Roshka-Chirukhi valley, the settlement is characterized by traditional stone architecture and serves as a primary access point to the Abudelauri alpine lakes and the base of the Chaukhi massif.

Geography and Landscape

Roshka is located at an elevation of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level. The village is surrounded by steep mountain slopes and alpine meadows. The terrain is dominated by the Chaukhi mountain range, which features distinctive, jagged rock formations popular for mountaineering and hiking. The Roshka River, a tributary of the Aragvi River system, flows through the area, shaped by snowmelt and seasonal rainfall.

Traditional Settlement Pattern

The village layout follows traditional Pshavian settlement patterns, consisting of compact, multi-story stone houses built to withstand harsh winters and variable mountain weather. Many of these structures incorporate dry-stone construction techniques, a historical method common in the mountainous regions of Eastern Georgia. The village serves as a seasonal base for local transhumance, where livestock are brought to higher pastures during the summer months.

Access and Environment

The village is connected via a mountain road that requires careful navigation. During late autumn, winter, and early spring, road access may be restricted due to heavy snowfall and avalanches. Visitors typically arrive in the warmer months when the alpine trails are accessible. The surrounding area is an active environment for environmental conservation and mountain tourism, as it sits on the edge of protected ecological zones. The primary activity for visitors in this area is hiking toward the colorful alpine lakes—green, blue, and white—situated further up the valley toward the Chaukhi pass.
