Nikortsminda

Nikortsminda is a village in the Ambrolauri municipality of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti region in Georgia. Situated on the Racha plateau at an elevation of approximately 1,100 meters, the settlement is known primarily for its central role in the regional landscape and its historic architectural significance.

The Nikortsminda Cathedral

The most prominent feature of the village is the Nikortsminda Cathedral, officially known as the Church of Saint Nicholas. Built in the early 11th century during the reign of King Bagrat III of Georgia, it stands as a major example of medieval Georgian architecture. The exterior is characterized by elaborate stone carvings depicting religious scenes, mythological figures, and intricate decorative patterns. The interior retains frescoes that date back to various periods, reflecting the historical continuity of the site.

Geography and Landscape

Nikortsminda lies in a transitional zone between the lower valleys of the Rioni River and the higher reaches of the Greater Caucasus. The surrounding area features a mix of agricultural fields and pastureland typical of the Racha region. The village is accessible by road from the town of Ambrolauri. Due to its position on the plateau, the village offers clear lines of sight toward the surrounding mountain ranges, though the terrain is primarily characterized by rolling hills and small-scale farming plots rather than the steep gorge geography found elsewhere in the region.

Local Economy

The economy of Nikortsminda is primarily rooted in agriculture and viticulture. Like much of the Ambrolauri municipality, the climate is suitable for the cultivation of local grape varieties, including the Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli used in Khvanchkara wine production. Residents engage in small-scale animal husbandry and the cultivation of seasonal vegetables. While the village attracts visitors interested in its historical cathedral, it remains a working agricultural community.
