Geography and Location

Gveleti is a picturesque mountain village located in the Kazbegi Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. Situated at an elevation of 1,560 meters, it lies within the dramatic Darial Gorge on the right bank of the Devdaraki River. The village serves as a gateway to some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in the High Caucasus, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical depth.

Historical Significance

Gveleti is one of the oldest settlements in the historical Khevi region. It was first documented in 14th-century Georgian chronicles, such as "Zhamtaagmtsereli." Due to its strategic position, the Gveleti Fortress played a crucial role in defending the Darial Pass, the main gateway through the Caucasus mountains. In 1301, King David VIII of Georgia took refuge in this very fortress during the Mongol invasions.

The village has a complex demographic history. For centuries, it was inhabited by both Georgians and Kists (Ingush people). However, in 1888, the Russian Imperial administration forcibly relocated most of the local Kist families to other parts of Georgia, leaving only a few households behind.

Landmarks and Tourism

  • Gveleti Waterfall: Often referred to as the "Snake's Waterfall," this stunning natural feature drops nearly 30 meters down a rocky cliff. It is easily accessible via a scenic hiking trail starting from the village.

  • Cultural Sites: The village is home to the Semghisi Shrine and the remnants of the medieval Kvclatsminda (All Saints) Church, reflecting the local spiritual traditions.
