Geography and Location

Gurianta is a picturesque village situated in the Ozurgeti Municipality of the Guria region, Georgia. Located on the Guria lowlands at an elevation of 64 meters above sea level, the village lies on the left bank of the Natanebi River. The landscape is characterized by lush greenery and a humid subtropical climate, which has historically favored the cultivation of tea, citrus, and other agricultural products typical of the region.

Vashnari: The Ancient Heart of Guria

The most significant historical landmark associated with Gurianta is the Vashnari archaeological site, located approximately 2 kilometers from the village center. Vashnari was a major fortified city between the 5th and 8th centuries AD and is widely believed to have served as the administrative and cultural capital of Guria during the early Christian period.

Key archaeological findings at Vashnari include:

• Fortifications: Remains of massive stone walls, defensive towers, and ditches that protected the city from invasions.

Vashnari played a crucial role in the defense of the Kingdom of Egrisi (Lazica).
