Guliani

Geography and Natural Setting

Guliani is a notable village in the Lanchkhuti Municipality of the Guria region, situated at an elevation of 120 meters above sea level. Nestled in the foothills of the Guria Ridge, the village is positioned on the left bank of the Lesa River. This location provides the area with a pleasant climate and lush greenery, typical of Western Georgia's landscape. The village is conveniently located about 9 kilometers from the city of Lanchkhuti.

One of the unique natural features of Guliani is its sulfurous water springs. These natural springs have been known to locals for generations and are valued for their potential health benefits, adding to the village's charm as a place of natural wellness.

Etymology and the Heart-Shaped Mountain

The name "Guliani" is derived from the nearby Mount Guliani, which overlooks the village. Local tradition holds that the mountain was named for its distinctive shape, which resembles a heart (known as 'Guli' in Georgian) when viewed from a distance. This symbolic landmark has defined the village's identity for centuries. Historical accounts suggest that a fortress once stood atop this mountain, serving as a strategic lookout point for the region.

Historical Context

The village has a deep historical background, once home to several significant religious sites. A stone Church of Saint George historically served as the spiritual heart of the community. Another important site within the village is Ghvedi, which once housed a stone church dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle. This church was documented in ecclesiastical records as late as 1828. Unfortunately, during the suppression of the Imereti Rebellion in the early 19th century, the site of Ghvedi and its church were destroyed by Imperial Russian forces. Despite this loss, the historical significance of these sites remains an integral part of Guliani's local heritage.
