Geography and Location

Gudauri is a high-mountain village perched on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range in the Kazbegi Municipality. Situated at an elevation of 2,196 meters above sea level, it lies along the historic Georgian Military Highway, near the Jvari Pass. The village is located on a sun-drenched plateau above the tree line, which provides vast, open spaces and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the Aragvi River valley.

History and Development

Long before it became a premier winter destination, Gudauri served as a vital transit point. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a mountain post station operated here, providing a necessary rest stop for travelers crossing the Caucasus. The transformation into a modern ski resort began in the early 1980s through a collaboration with Austrian developers. Since its official inauguration in 1988, Gudauri has grown into the highest and most developed ski center in Georgia, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world.

Local Context and Activities

Gudauri is world-famous for its exceptional skiing conditions, characterized by deep snow cover and a lack of rocks or hidden hazards on its slopes.

  • Skiing and Snowboarding: The resort offers over 70 kilometers of groomed trails suitable for all skill levels. Its highest lift reaches an impressive altitude of over 3,200 meters on Mount Sadzele.
  • Adventure Sports: It is a hub for freeriding and heli-skiing, offering access to untouched powder. Paragliding is also a signature activity, allowing visitors to soar above the dramatic alpine landscape.
  • Summer in the Mountains: When the snow melts, the region transforms into a destination for trekking, mountain biking, and exploring the high-altitude flora of the Caucasus.

The nearby Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, also known as the Gudauri Panorama, offers one of the most iconic viewpoints in the country, looking down into the "Devil's Valley" (Eshmakis Khevi). Gudauri remains a perfect blend of raw natural beauty and modern infrastructure.
