Geography and Landscape

Gudani is a prominent high-mountain village located in the Dusheti Municipality, within the historical province of Khevsureti. Perched on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Range, the village overlooks the valley of the Gudanischala River, a tributary of the Khevsurian Aragvi.

• Community Center: Historically, it served as the administrative and social hub for the surrounding area. It was here that the council of elders and 'Khevisberis' (community leaders) would gather to discuss judicial matters, resolve disputes, and plan for the defense of the highlands.
• Cradle of Clans: Local lore identifies Gudani as the ancestral home of the three primary Khevsurian clans: the Arabuli, Gogojuri, and Chincharauli. These families have shaped the cultural and social fabric of the region for centuries.
• Legacy of Traditions: The village is deeply associated with the preservation of Khevsurian identity, including their unique customary laws, intricate traditional clothing (talavari), and the legendary warrior ethos of the mountain people.

The Sacred Gudani Cross

The spiritual essence of the village is embodied in the Gudani Cross (Gudanis Jvari), the preeminent shrine of all Khevsureti.

• Spiritual Hub: Located on a ridge overlooking the village, this shrine has been the most sacred site for the Khevsur people for generations. It represents a unique synthesis of ancient mountain beliefs and Christian traditions.
