Gostibe is one of the highest and most scenic villages in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia, nestled on the northern slopes of the Trialeti Ridge.

History and Heritage

The recorded history of Gostibe is deeply intertwined with the feudal era of Georgia and the prominent Saakadze family.

• 1652: King Rostom granted the village to Ioram Saakadze.
• 18th Century: The village was nearly depopulated due to frequent Lezgin raids.
• 1866: A revival began as highlanders from Pshavi and Gudamaqari regions resettled the area.

Holy Trinity Church

A significant landmark is the Holy Trinity Church, a single-nave structure dating back to the late 10th century. Built from grey and greenish hewn stone, it stands as a testament to medieval Georgian architecture.

• Artistry: Features ancient red-painted crosses and inscriptions on its interior walls.
• Master Builder: Inscriptions mention the architect, David the Mason.
• Legacy: Since the 17th century, the church has served as a spiritual anchor for the resettled community and remains a site of great cultural importance.

Today, Gostibe is a hidden gem for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The trail connecting Rkoni to Gostibe is particularly famous for its stunning alpine vistas. The village also features an old defensive tower, a silent witness to the strategic importance this mountain settlement once held.
