Gorisa

Geography and Location

The village of Gorisa is situated in the Sachkhere Municipality of the Imereti region, in western Georgia. Perched on the Chiatura Plateau at an elevation of 820 meters, it offers a characteristic middle-mountain landscape. Gorisa holds geographical significance as the source of the Froni River, which flows into the Qvirila basin. The village is conveniently located about 10 kilometers from the town of Sachkhere.

Historical Overview

Gorisa first appears in historical records in the 17th century. The village is renowned as the birthplace of influential Georgian figures, most notably the 19th-century writer and publicist Giorgi Tsereteli and his son, the prominent politician Irakli Tsereteli. Its history is deeply intertwined with the noble Tsereteli family, who played a significant role in the region's social and political life for centuries.

Cultural Landmarks

A key architectural highlight of the village is the Tkhmorisi St. George Church, dating back to the 19th century. This hall-type church is constructed from rubble stone and features a distinctive three-story bell tower on its western side. The church is decorated with intricate stone carvings, including a relief of St. George above the northern entrance. In 2018, it was officially designated as a monument of national cultural heritage.

Modern-day Gorisa is a vibrant rural community with its own public school. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, benefiting from the fertile soil and favorable climate of the Imereti highlands.
