Location and Geography

The village of Gori is a notable settlement within the Ambrolauri Municipality, situated at an elevation of 680 meters above sea level. Perched on the left bank of the Rioni River, the village lies on the northern slopes of the watershed between the Krikhula and Rioni rivers. Its location is particularly convenient, being just 1 kilometer away from the regional center of Ambrolauri, making it one of the most accessible and well-connected villages in the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region.

Historical Landmarks

The primary historical treasure of Gori is the St. George’s Church, a single-nave structure that stands as a testament to the village's long history. The church is architecturally significant due to its distinct construction layers:

• Medieval Foundations: The eastern part of the church, faced with porous limestone (shirimi), dates back to the developed Middle Ages.
• 19th-Century Updates: Much of the current structure reflects a later reconstruction carried out in the 19th century.
• The Enclosure: The church is surrounded by a sturdy wall built from well-processed broken stone, a common feature in traditional Racha religious architecture.

Gori is part of the Itsa community and is deeply integrated into the cultural landscape of Lower Racha. The village's name, "Gori" (meaning "hill" in Georgian), likely refers to its elevated position overlooking the river valley.
