Geography and Climate
Gorelovka is situated in the high-altitude Javakheti Plateau, at an elevation of 2065 meters. The landscape is characterized by vast, open alpine meadows and a harsh climate with long, snowy winters. Nearby, the Madatapa Lake serves as a vital sanctuary for migratory birds, including pelicans and cranes, making the area a significant spot for eco-tourism and birdwatching.
The Doukhobor Heritage
The village is most famous for being the spiritual center of the Doukhobors ("Spirit Wrestlers") in Georgia. Exiled from Russia in the 1840s for their pacifist beliefs and rejection of the Orthodox Church, they established a unique community here. The architecture of Gorelovka is distinct, featuring traditional Russian-style houses painted in vibrant shades of blue and white, often adorned with hand-carved shutters and floral motifs.
