Gorana

Geography and Location

Gorana is a village situated in the Tianeti Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region in eastern Georgia. Perched at an elevation of 1,100 meters above sea level, the village enjoys a mountainous climate and is part of the historic Ertso-Tianeti region.

• Setting: It is located in the upper Iori Valley, nestled among the southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus mountains.

Historical Background

The history of Gorana is deeply intertwined with the Ertso-Tianeti province, which was historically part of the Duchy (Saeristavo) of Kakheti. During the Middle Ages, this area served as a vital commercial and political link between the heart of Georgia and neighboring regions.

• Depopulation and Resettlement: Like much of eastern Georgia, the village suffered during the Persian invasions of 1614 led by Shah Abbas. The resulting vacuum was later filled by highlanders migrating from the nearby regions of Pshavi and Khevsureti, who brought their unique traditions and resilience to the area.
• Heritage: The surrounding landscape is dotted with medieval ruins and religious sites, reflecting the strategic and spiritual importance of the region throughout Georgian history.
