Geography and Location

Gona is one of the most breathtaking high-mountain villages in Upper Racha. Situated in the Oni Municipality at an elevation of 1,680 meters above sea level, it lies in the picturesque Chveshura River gorge. The village is part of the Ghebi administrative unit and is located approximately 7-8 kilometers from Ghebi itself.

• Alpine Landscape: Surrounded by the towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus, Gona is often referred to as "Georgian Switzerland" due to its pristine alpine meadows and proximity to snow-capped summits.
• Accessibility: Reaching Gona requires a 4WD vehicle or a dedicated hike from Ghebi, which has helped preserve its authentic atmosphere and untouched natural beauty.

Historical Heritage

Despite its remote location, Gona boasts significant cultural landmarks that reflect its medieval past:

• Gona Archangel Church: The village is home to a medieval hall-type church built with finely hewn limestone (shirim). Its unique architecture features a cylindrical vault and an altar separated only by pilasters. The church underwent restoration in the late 19th century.
• Traditional Architecture: Remnants of old Racha-style stone and wooden houses can still be found in the village, showcasing the local building traditions adapted to the harsh mountain climate.

Local Context and Tourism

Gona serves as a primary destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts looking to explore the wilder side of the Racha region.

• Glaciers and Peaks: The village offers stunning views of Summit Tsitela (4,259 m) and the Kirtisho Glacier, one of the largest in the area. Hiking trails from Gona lead towards these impressive natural formations.
• Border Zone: Due to its proximity to the Russian border, there is a military border post at the edge of the village. Visitors planning to hike beyond the village toward the glaciers must carry identification and may need to obtain a special permit.
• Seasonal Life: During the winter months, Gona becomes nearly inaccessible due to heavy snowfall. The best time to visit is between June and October when the weather is mild and the trails are clear.
