Gometsari is a high-mountain village located in the Dusheti Municipality, within the Magaroskari administrative unit. Perched at an elevation of 1,480 meters on the eastern slopes of the Gudamaqri Ridge, the village overlooks the Magaroskhevi River, a right tributary of the Pshavi Aragvi. Its position within the Gometsari Gorge offers a dramatic landscape typical of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region.
History and Cultural Heritage
The village and its surroundings are home to several significant historical monuments that highlight its importance throughout the centuries:
- Church of the Mother of God: Located in the village center, this hall church dates back to the late 18th century.
- Saqdartgora Church: A smaller hall church from the 8th-9th centuries stands near the village, representing early medieval architecture.
- Medieval Fortresses: The gorge is guarded by the ruins of the Kelkvitela and Simagreula fortresses. Kelkvitela Fortress was strategically positioned to protect the routes from Tianeti and Mtiuleti-Gudamaqri. In 1944, a rare 10th-century legal document carved in stone was discovered here.
