Geography
Godogani is a picturesque village situated in the Martvili Municipality of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region in Western Georgia. Located on the Odishi-Guria plain, the village lies on the left bank of the Ochkhomuri River at an elevation of 283 meters above sea level. It is part of the Kurzu community and is located approximately 25 kilometers from the town of Martvili. The geographical setting is characterized by the lush landscapes of the Samegrelo foothills, providing fertile grounds and a mild climate.
History and Archaeology
The area surrounding Godogani has been inhabited since ancient times. Archaeological evidence found at the "Chakhati" hill settlement suggests that the region was a significant center for bronze and iron metalworking as early as the 10th-12th centuries BCE. These findings link the village to the ancient Colchian civilization, highlighting its long-standing importance in the region's development.
In historical records, Godogani is first mentioned in the works of the famous Georgian scholar Vakhushti Bagrationi. The village was also the site of a major battle in 1690 during the power struggle for the throne of the Kingdom of Imereti, indicating its strategic significance in medieval Georgia.
