Ghrmaghele

Geographical Location

Ghrmaghele is a charming village situated in the Lanchkhuti Municipality of the Guria region in western Georgia. Nestled within the Supsa River valley, the village sits at an elevation of approximately 25 meters above sea level. It is located about 16 kilometers from the municipal center, the city of Lanchkhuti. The landscape is characterized by the lush lowlands of Guria, benefiting from a humid subtropical climate that has shaped the local lifestyle and agriculture for generations.

History and Archaeology

The history of Ghrmaghele stretches back to late antiquity, making it a site of significant archaeological interest. Excavations have revealed the remains of a 6th-century basilica, which features:

• A distinctive red-paved floor and a cross-shaped baptistery;
• A bronze cross with an attached chain;
• A stone slab adorned with a Bolnisi cross, a classic symbol of early Georgian Christian architecture;
• Fragments of both local Colchian and imported amphorae, suggesting that the settlement was once part of a vibrant trade network. These historical artifacts are currently preserved and displayed at the Lanchkhuti Local Lore Museum.

Local Context and Life

In the past, Ghrmaghele was part of the Mikelgabrieli rural community. During the Soviet era, the village became well-known for its citrus plantations, which were a cornerstone of the regional economy. Today, the village maintains its educational infrastructure with a local public school and a kindergarten. Life in Ghrmaghele is deeply rooted in Gurian traditions, where the connection to the land and the history of the Supsa valley remains a vital part of the community's identity.
