Ghreli

Geography and Location

The village of Ghreli is situated in the Akhaltsikhe Basin, within the Akhaltsikhe Municipality of the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. Perched at an elevation of 1120 meters above sea level, it is remarkably close to the regional center, being only 2 kilometers away from the city of Akhaltsikhe. As part of the Minadze community, Ghreli enjoys the typical rugged yet scenic landscape of the Samtskhe highlands.

Historical Context

Ghreli is an ancient settlement with deep roots in the history of the Samtskhe-Saatabago principality. Its strategic importance is highlighted by its proximity to the Sapara Monastery, a major cultural and political hub during the Middle Ages. Following the Ottoman conquest of the region in the late 16th century, Ghreli was incorporated into the Ottoman administrative system. According to the 1595 Ottoman census (the "Great Defter of Gurjistan Vilayet"), the village was inhabited by 15 Christian families. It remained under Ottoman rule for nearly 250 years until the territory was reclaimed following the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829.

Local Landmarks and Community

• Sapara Monastery: The most prominent landmark near Ghreli, located about 7-8 kilometers from the village. This 9th-century complex served as the residence of the Jaqeli family, the powerful Atabags of Samtskhe.
• Infrastructure: Within the village itself, there is a public school that serves the local youth.
• Lifestyle: The community's lifestyle is closely tied to the land, with agriculture and livestock being the primary activities, shaped by the region's unique high-altitude climate.
