Garakha

Geography and Nature

The village of Garakha is situated in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, within the Chkhorotsku Municipality, on the Odishi Lowland. It lies on the left bank of the Ochkhomuri River, a tributary of the Khobistskali, at an elevation of approximately 265 meters. Its location is unique as it practically borders the municipal center, Chkhorotsku, yet it retains the tranquil and lush atmosphere characteristic of a traditional Megrelian village.

One of the natural highlights of the area is the Garakha Cave, which is listed in the "Red Book of Georgia." This cave is of significant interest to speleologists and nature enthusiasts alike. The Ochkhomuri River adds to the village's charm, providing a refreshing microclimate and beautiful spots for relaxation along its banks.

Historical Heritage

Garakha's history is deeply intertwined with its ancient name, Najagu. Historically, the current town of Chkhorotsku was considered part of the Garakha (Najagu) territory. The village is home to several important archaeological and historical sites:

• Garakha (Najagu) Fortress: A late medieval fortification that reportedly belonged to the Shelia noble family. Originally, the fortress featured three defensive towers, one of which is now completely destroyed.
• Khomakirde Fortress: Located about 1 kilometer west of the Najagu fortress on Khomakirde Hill. The ruins found here, including two towers and a defensive wall, date back to the 4th-6th centuries. They reflect the fortification traditions of the Kingdom of Egrisi (Lazica), highlighting the strategic importance of this location in Late Antiquity.
• Ancient Church Ruins: On a neighboring hill, the remains of a late medieval church have been discovered, pointing to the long-standing spiritual life of the community.
