Geography and Nature

Perched at an elevation of 2080 meters in the Ninotsminda Municipality, Foka is a village defined by its dramatic landscapes and alpine climate. It sits on the southeastern shore of Lake Paravani, the largest lake in Georgia by surface area. The Javakheti Plateau, a volcanic highland, provides a backdrop of rolling hills and vast horizons. Winters here are long and legendary for their severity, often blanketing the region in deep snow for months. In contrast, the summers are cool and refreshing, offering crystal-clear air and stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks in the lake's azure waters.

Historical Significance

Foka holds a place of unparalleled importance in Georgian history as the gateway of Christianity. In the 4th century, Saint Nino of Cappadocia entered Georgia through this very spot. According to hagiographic accounts, she rested by the shores of Lake Paravani for two days, where she experienced a divine vision. An angel appeared to her, presenting a scroll that encouraged her to continue her mission to the royal capital of Mtskheta.

The village is home to the St. Nino Church, a hall-type structure dating back to the 11th century (1030-1040). Built during the reign of King Bagrat IV and under the direction of Catholicos-Patriarch Ioane V Okropiri, the church is a masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture. It features finely carved stone blocks and elegant decorative motifs. Archaeological excavations in the area have also revealed remains of prehistoric and early feudal settlements, as well as a significant hoard of 14th-century Ilkhanid silver coins, highlighting Foka's historical role as a junction on ancient trade routes.

Spiritual Life and the Monastery

After centuries of silence, monastic life was revived in Foka in 1989 under the blessing of Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II. Initially, a men's monastery was established, followed by the St. Nino Nunnery in 1992. Today, the nunnery is the heart of the village's spiritual and social life. The sisters have transformed the site into a thriving community center, blending rigorous spiritual practice with educational and social initiatives that support the local population.

Local Traditions and Craftsmanship

The Foka Nunnery is world-renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship and artisanal products. The sisters have successfully combined ancient Javakhetian traditions with modern European techniques, particularly in cheesemaking. They produce over 16 varieties of gourmet cheese, including blue cheese and aged varieties infused with local herbs.

Beyond the dairy, the monastery hosts a workshop for cloisonné enamel (Minankari), producing intricate religious icons and jewelry that are highly sought after. Visitors can also find handmade chocolates, organic honey, fruit jams, and aromatic candles. These activities not only preserve traditional crafts but also provide a sustainable model for the local economy in this remote highland region.

Tourism and Pilgrimage

Every year on June 1st, Foka becomes the center of the 'Ninooba' celebration, marking the anniversary of Saint Nino's arrival in Georgia. Thousands of pilgrims gather by Lake Paravani for a festive liturgy and a mass baptism in the lake's cold waters. This event kicks off a 40-day walking pilgrimage that follows Saint Nino's historical path all the way to Mtskheta.

For travelers, Foka offers a unique blend of religious heritage and eco-tourism. The area around Lake Paravani is a paradise for birdwatchers, hikers, and photographers. While the harsh winters make access difficult, the period from late spring to autumn is ideal for experiencing the village's serene atmosphere, spiritual depth, and the raw beauty of the Georgian highlands.
