Fkhundavi

Geography and Location

Fkhundavi is located in Eastern Georgia, within the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region and Dusheti Municipality. The village is built on the right bank of the Arkala River (a tributary of the Aragvi), at an elevation of 1040 meters. It belongs to the Ananuri community and is approximately 25 kilometers away from the town of Dusheti. The village's geographical position at the crossroads of the mountains and the lowlands results in a moderately humid climate, characterized by cool summers and snowy winters.

Historical Past

The name "Fkhundavi" carries an interesting etymology. Historians believe it is related to the word "Khundi," which in Old Georgian referred to a chick of a pigeon or other birds. It is suggested that the village emerged during the late feudal period, as it is rarely mentioned in earlier sources. Historically, Fkhundavi was part of the Aragvi Duchy and played a role in the region's defensive and economic system, which was centered around the strategic Ananuri Fortress.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

Although Fkhundavi is a small settlement, its architecture is typical of mountainous Kartli. Remains of traditional stone structures can still be found here, blending organically into the landscape. Near the village lies one of the region's most important monuments—the Pudznari (Bodavi) Virgin Mary Church, dating back to the 13th century. This temple is a magnificent example of Georgian architecture and bears witness to the ancient cultural strength of this region.

Nature and Environment

The environment of Fkhundavi is distinguished by its diverse flora and fauna. The village is surrounded by deciduous forests, dominated by beech, hornbeam, and oak trees. The Arkala River valley creates a microclimate ideal for relaxation and hiking. In spring, the mountain slopes are covered with wildflowers, while in autumn, they offer a true carnival of colors.
