Fari

Geography and Location

Fari is situated in the Mestia Municipality, within the breathtaking region of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti. Perched at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level, the village sits on the right bank of the Inguri River. It serves as the administrative center for the Fari community, which encompasses several surrounding hamlets. The village is surrounded by the towering peaks of the Greater Caucasus, offering a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped mountains and deep, verdant valleys.

History and Cultural Heritage

Historically, Fari was a significant part of "Free Svaneti," a collection of communities that maintained a high degree of autonomy throughout the centuries. The village has long been a cultural and spiritual hub for the region. Its most famous landmark is the Nakipari St. George Church, located within the Fari community. This 10th-century structure is world-renowned for its interior frescoes, painted in 1130 by the royal artist Teodore, who also decorated other iconic Svanetian churches like Iprari and Lagurka. These murals represent the pinnacle of medieval Georgian monumental art.

Architecture: The Svan Towers

The architectural landscape of Fari is defined by the iconic Svan towers (koshki). Built between the 9th and 13th centuries, these stone defensive structures were designed to protect families during times of conflict and natural disasters. Many of these towers, along with traditional stone houses known as machubi, still stand today, bearing witness to the region's resilient past. The harmony between the rugged stone architecture and the alpine environment is a hallmark of Fari’s unique character.

The nature surrounding Fari is nothing short of spectacular. The village is a gateway to numerous hiking trails that lead through alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months. The community remains active in mountain agriculture and livestock breeding, maintaining a lifestyle that has changed little over the centuries, despite the growing interest from global travelers.
