Fanaga

Geography and Location

Fanaga is located in the Lentekhi Municipality of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region. The village is nestled on the left side of the Tskhenistskali River, at an altitude of 1040 meters above sea level. Situated approximately 18 kilometers from the town of Lentekhi, it is an integral part of the Choluri community. Its geographical position provides a secluded and peaceful atmosphere where the crisp mountain air meets the refreshing breeze of the river valley.

Historical Background

Lower Svaneti, where Fanaga is located, was historically known as "Sadadiano Svaneti." Unlike Upper Svaneti, this region integrated into the Georgian feudal system earlier and maintained close ties with the Principality of Odishi (Samegrelo). As part of the Choluri community, Fanaga has held strategic importance in the Tskhenistskali gorge for centuries. The village's history is deeply intertwined with the stories of Svan noble families and their enduring commitment to preserving their unique cultural identity.

Architecture and Cultural Heritage

Fanaga and its surroundings preserve fine examples of traditional Svan architecture. Of particular note are the "Machubi"—traditional Svan dwellings designed to withstand harsh winters while housing both families and livestock. The Choluri community, to which Fanaga belongs, is home to the St. George Church, a spiritual landmark of the area. The architecture of Lower Svaneti is characterized by masterful stonework and defensive structures that give the village a monumental and timeless appearance.

The village is surrounded by the lush mixed forests and alpine meadows of the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains. The Tskhenistskali River flows nearby, creating a unique microclimate that supports diverse flora and fauna. The area around Fanaga is a haven for nature lovers, offering excellent opportunities for ecotourism and hiking. In Fanaga, Svan traditions and the laws of hospitality remain a cornerstone of daily life. Locals hold deep respect for the Svan hat, whose three colors (white, black, and grey) carry profound symbolic meaning related to the spiritual world.
