Faki

Location and Geography

Faki is located in Western Georgia, in the Lentekhi Municipality of the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region. The village is situated on the left bank of the Kheledula River (a right tributary of the Tskhenistskali), at an elevation of 1120 meters above sea level. It is part of the Kheledi community and is located approximately 6 kilometers from the municipal center, the town of Lentekhi.

The geographical position of the village makes it one of the important settlements of Lower Svaneti. The mountainous terrain and proximity to the river create a unique microclimate characteristic of high-altitude zones. Faki is surrounded by the branches of the Caucasus Range, which gives it a special aesthetic appeal.

History and Culture

Faki is an integral part of historical Lower Svaneti. The history of the village is closely linked to the general past of Svaneti, where strong traditions and cultural identity have been formed over centuries. The village is home to the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, which serves as a vital spiritual center for the local population. Archival materials indicate that at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the church was actively functioning, hosting all significant religious rituals.

Over time, the village has undergone demographic changes. While 173 people lived here in 2002, the population decreased to 22 by 2014. Nevertheless, Faki maintains its cultural heritage and Svan spirit, reflected in the local architecture and way of life.

Nature and Environment

Faki's nature is characterized by a typical Svan landscape. The village is surrounded by mixed forests, dominated by coniferous and deciduous species. The Kheledula River valley is rich in flora and fauna. The air here is crystal clear, as is characteristic of high-mountain regions.

The areas surrounding the village are ideal for hiking and nature enthusiasts. Alpine meadows, which bloom in many colors in spring, and mountain streams leave an indelible impression on visitors. Natural resources and clean water are among the village's main riches.

Local Life and Traditions

The population of Faki still faithfully observes Svan traditions. Hospitality is an integral part of the local way of life. Svan cuisine, with its famous dishes (such as Kubdari and Svan salt), is part of the village's daily life.

Local life is mainly connected to livestock farming and agriculture. Despite the harsh climatic conditions, the population manages to maintain traditional farming. The Svan language, songs, and oral traditions are the foundation of Faki's cultural identity, passed down from generation to generation.
