The Village of Dvabzu — A Historical and Cultural Gem of Guria

Introduction

Dvabzu is one of the oldest and most significant villages in the Guria region, specifically within the Ozurgeti Municipality. Located on the left bank of the Natanebi River at an elevation of 130 meters, the village is renowned not only for its geography but also for its centuries-old heritage, deeply intertwined with the region's commercial and religious life.

A fascinating local legend surrounds the village's name: it is said that Saint George appeared to a priest in a dream, instructing him to build a church where an ox-drawn cart carrying an icon would catch fire. Dvabzu is famous for its religious monuments, featuring two significant churches:

• 5th-6th Century Basilica: This ancient structure, built with river stones, is a testament to early Christian architecture in the region. Despite historical damage, it underwent restoration in the 2010s and is now an active place of worship.
• St. George Church (1874): This three-apse basilica was constructed by Greek master builders John and Constantine Kondoidi. The church is distinguished by its refined stonework, wide windows, and elegant proportions. A three-story bell tower stands nearby, serving as a landmark for the village center.
