Dumatskho — A High-Mountain Gem of the Gudamaqari Valley

Geography and Nature

Dumatskho is located in Eastern Georgia, within the Dusheti Municipality, as part of the Gudamaqari administrative unit. The village is perched on the eastern slopes of the Mtiuleti Range, at an elevation of 1590 meters above sea level. It is a place where alpine air and tranquility merge seamlessly. The Gudamaqari Valley, where Dumatskho is situated, is known for its rugged yet breathtaking nature, rocky mountains, and crystal-clear springs.

The village is located 60 kilometers from the center of Dusheti. The nature here is enchanting at any time of year: in spring, the mountain slopes are covered in wildflowers, while winter offers a truly fairytale sight to visitors.

Historical Past

The history of Dumatskho spans centuries. The village is mentioned in historical sources as far back as the 18th century—in 1772, it was described by the German traveler and researcher Johann Güldenstädt along with other villages of Gudamaqari. However, archaeological data suggests that this territory was inhabited much earlier. At the top of the village lies an early medieval settlement site, testifying to the region's ancient and rich past.

Architectural Heritage

Dumatskho is distinguished by its cultural monuments. About 1.5 kilometers northwest of the village stands the late medieval Zegardi St. George Church. This is a hall-type structure built with dry stone masonry. With its simple and austere forms, the church blends perfectly into the mountain landscape.

Additionally, the remains of defensive structures are preserved in the vicinity of the village:

• 'Zurgliani' (Backed) Tower — Located east of the settlement, on the road to Bursachiri.
• Second 'Zurgliani' Tower — Located northwest of the settlement.

These towers are symbols of the bravery and dedication of the Gudamaqari people, who defended the valley from enemy invasions for centuries.

Local Life and Traditions

Today, Dumatskho is a small but resilient village with a population of about 20 people. The main activities of the locals are livestock breeding and agriculture. The people of Gudamaqari are known for their hospitality and loyalty to highlander traditions.

The rhythm of life here is calm and unhurried. Every family is closely connected to nature. Winters are often harsh, but a snow-covered Dumatskho is an unforgettable sight. Local festivals, often linked to ancient shrines, are the best way for the village to come together.
