Duluzaurebi — A Historical Gem in the Mountains of Tianeti

Geography and Nature

The village of Duluzaurebi is situated in eastern Georgia, within the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region and the Tianeti Municipality. Nestled in the historical Ertso-Tianeti area, this settlement sits at an elevation of 1180 meters on a rocky mountain slope. Located approximately 6 kilometers north of the town of Tianeti, the village is surrounded by the picturesque landscapes of the Iori River valley.

The local environment is characterized by a typical highland climate and diverse flora. The rocky terrain and alpine meadows lend the village a unique blend of ruggedness and charm. Duluzaurebi is an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility and a close connection with pristine nature.

History and Archaeological Significance

The history of Duluzaurebi dates back centuries. Archaeological materials found within the village territory testify that this area was inhabited as early as antiquity. One of the most significant finds is a denarius of Augustus, discovered near the church. This discovery indicates that a prominent social and cultural center existed here during the early centuries.

The Medieval Kviriia Complex

On the southern outskirts of the village, perched on a mountain slope, stands the Duluzaurebi Kviriia Complex—a fascinating example of medieval Georgian architecture. The complex integrates several structures:

• Kviriia Church: A hall church dating from the 9th-11th centuries, constructed with finely dressed shirimi stone. The church features a deep, semi-circular apse and two entrances—from the south and the west. Later additions of porches reflect different stages of the building's development.
• Rectangular Tower: A late medieval defensive structure that still retains three floors. Built with broken stone and cobblestone, it provided resilience during enemy invasions.
• Apsidal (Zurgiani) Tower: Located northwest of the church, this structure is now almost completely in ruins, yet its remains still offer a glimpse into the fortification arts of the time.
• Enclosure Wall: The complex is surrounded by an irregularly shaped wall covering about 0.8 hectares. Traces of an ancient water pipeline have been found outside the wall, speaking to the high level of engineering at the time.

Local Life and Traditions

Today, Duluzaurebi is home to about 60 residents. Despite its small population, the village maintains the hospitality and traditional lifestyle characteristic of Georgian highlanders. Locals primarily engage in livestock breeding and agriculture. Daily life here is peaceful and closely tied to the rhythms of nature.

The village becomes especially vibrant during folk festivals, when people from various parts of Tianeti gather at the Kviriia complex for prayer and traditional rituals. This site is not just a historical monument but a living spiritual center for the local community.
