Dudaurebi - A Serene Haven on the Slopes of the Alevi Ridge

The village of Dudaurebi is situated in eastern Georgia within the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, part of the Chonkadze administrative unit of the Dusheti Municipality. It occupies a position on the eastern slopes of the Alevi Ridge at an elevation of 1,110 meters. Located just 4 kilometers northwest of the municipal center of Dusheti, the village provides access to the mountainous landscape of the region while maintaining a quiet, remote atmosphere.

The environment consists of typical Georgian foothills, featuring a mix of alpine meadows and forest cover. These natural surroundings contribute to the calm atmosphere of the area, which serves as a small, functioning settlement within the broader landscape of the Aragvi Valley.

Historical Context

Historically, Dudaurebi was linked to the development of the Aragvi Duchy, an area that served as a passage between the high mountains and the lower valleys of Georgia. While the present-day settlement is small, the presence of architectural ruins indicates that the area supported more significant activity in previous centuries. The village name is associated with the Dudauri surname, which has long been present in this part of the country. The history of the area is also closely tied to the Georgian Orthodox Church, which remains a focal point for the local cultural identity.

Medieval Heritage and Ruins

The village is noted for its historic religious structures, which are primarily found in a ruined state. The Dudaurebi Mother of God Church is located on the edge of the village near the road. The structure was built using local rubble stone. It is a hall-type church, characterized by a lack of an apse, ending instead in a straight eastern wall. Currently, the site preserves only the lower portions of the western and northern walls, which stand at approximately one meter in height. The historical entrance was located on the southern side.

Another historic site exists in the upper neighborhood of the village, known as Zibaanis. This was the location of the Kviratskhobelsi Church. The structure was removed during the 1930s, leaving only fragments of worked tuff stone to mark its former site.

Modern Life in the Highlands

Today, Dudaurebi is home to a small community of approximately 20 residents. The local economy is centered on traditional agricultural practices, including livestock farming and small-scale land cultivation. The village is accessible via local roads that connect the settlement to the central infrastructure of the Dusheti Municipality. The area is frequented by those visiting for the purpose of exploring historical ruins and experiencing the traditional life of the Georgian mountain villages. The community maintains the local tradition of hospitality, with daily life remaining highly dependent on the natural environment and seasonal cycles of the region.
