Doreulebi — A Historical Village in the Heart of Tianeti

Geography and Nature

Doreulebi is situated in the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of eastern Georgia, within the Tianeti Municipality. The village lies in the valley of the Adzezi River, a right tributary of the Iori, at an elevation of 940 meters above sea level. Surrounded by the rolling hills of the Ertsos valley and dense forests of beech and oak, the village enjoys a refreshing mountain climate. The natural landscape is characterized by its biodiversity and lush pastures, which have supported local livelihoods for centuries.

A Journey Through Time: From Tsiabeti to Doreulebi

The village has a long and complex history. In ancient documents, it was known as Tsiabeti and later as Chuchuliantkara. The current name, Doreulebi, was established in the early 19th century following a wave of migration from the Ksani Valley.

Historically, Tsiabeti was part of the Kakheti principality and later, in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was owned by the Svetitskhoveli Monastery. The village suffered significantly during the invasions of Shah Abbas in the early 17th century, which led to the displacement and loss of much of its population. By the late 17th and early 18th centuries, the influential Cholokashvili family extended their control over the area, purchasing estates and settling subjects here.

Architectural Heritage and Ancient Roots

Doreulebi is home to significant cultural and archaeological sites. To the northwest of the village, at a site known as 'Grdzelnakveti,' archaeologists have uncovered a settlement dating back to the 1st-4th centuries AD. Excavations have revealed ceramic fragments, bronze items, and beads, providing a glimpse into the life of the people who inhabited this valley nearly two millennia ago.

To the northeast stands the 'Vanatis Khati,' a late medieval hall church. Although currently in a state of ruin, it remains a poignant symbol of the region's religious heritage. Additionally, the remains of a medieval village can be found about 1.5 kilometers from the current settlement, marking the shifts in habitation patterns over the centuries.

Local Life and Modern Context

Today, Doreulebi is a quiet community with a population of approximately 70 residents, primarily ethnic Georgians. Life in the village revolves around traditional agriculture, livestock farming, and beekeeping. While small, the village retains the authentic charm and hospitality characteristic of the Tianeti region. Its combination of historical depth, archaeological significance, and serene natural beauty makes it a hidden gem for those exploring the cultural landscapes of Georgia.
