Dolasvifi – Svanetian Serenity at the Foot of Ushba

Geography and Nature

The village of Dolasvifi is located in Upper Svaneti, within the Mestia Municipality and the Becho community. It is situated on the left bank of the Dolra River (a right tributary of the Inguri), at an elevation of 1,320 meters above sea level. Located approximately 18 kilometers from Mestia, it is one of the most picturesque settlements in the Becho Valley.

Dolasvifi's nature is characterized by its stunning alpine landscapes. Towering above the village is one of the Caucasus's most impressive and challenging peaks — Mount Ushba. The Becho Valley, where Dolasvifi is located, is considered the main gateway to the Ushba Massif. The surrounding area is rich with coniferous forests, alpine meadows, and cascading waterfalls.

A highlight of Dolasvifi is its mineral water springs. The local "sour waters" (as they are called by the residents) are famous for their healing properties and refreshing taste. History and Architecture

Dolasvifi, like the entire Becho community, has played a significant role in the history of Svaneti. Becho was historically known as one of the powerful communities of "Free Svaneti." The village's name and its past are deeply intertwined with Svanetian traditions and customs.

The architectural character of the village is typical for Svan settlements. To this day, medieval stone towers and traditional residential complexes known as "machubs" have been preserved. These structures served not only a defensive function but were also symbols of the strength and unity of the Svan family. Dolasvifi's narrow streets and old stone houses take visitors on a journey through time, offering a glimpse into the rugged yet proud environment where Svans have lived for centuries.

Local Life and Traditions

Today, approximately 60 people live in Dolasvifi. The population consists mainly of ethnic Svans who faithfully preserve their ancestral language, songs, and traditions. The rhythm of local life is closely tied to the mountain environment and the changing seasons.

The main occupations of the residents include:

• Animal Husbandry: Svanetian cattle and mountain pastures provide delicious dairy products, including the famous Svanetian sulguni cheese.
• Agriculture: Despite the high-altitude terrain, locals grow potatoes and other crops adapted to mountain conditions.
• Tourism: Due to its proximity to Ushba, Dolasvifi often serves as a resting point for hikers and mountaineers. Locals offer guesthouses and guide services to visitors.

Local festivals are celebrated with great respect in the village, featuring traditional Svanetian round dances (perkhuli) and polyphonic songs.
