Village

Davati

A historic village in Dusheti Municipality, recognized for the 4th-century Davati Stela and its position in the Gudamaqari Range.

Davati is a historic settlement in the Dusheti Municipality of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1160 meters on the eastern slopes of the Gudamaqari Range, the village is accessed primarily via local mountain roads that connect it to the broader network leading from Dusheti. Its geography is defined by the proximity of the Datvisiskhevi River, creating a rugged, mountainous environment that has remained largely isolated from major transit corridors.

Historical Significance

The village gained significant academic recognition in the 1980s following archaeological excavations at the local church. These efforts led to the discovery of a 4th-century stone stela, now famously referred to as the Davati Stela. The artifact features a sequence of the alphabet, serving as a critical piece of evidence in the study of the early development of the Georgian script. Historical records verify the existence of the settlement as far back as 1170, marking it as a site of long-standing human activity in this part of the Greater Caucasus foothills.

Landscape and Settlement Character

Davati retains the atmosphere of a traditional mountain village. The terrain is steep and characterized by typical highland flora, benefiting from the air quality and quietude associated with the Gudamaqari Range. The built environment is sparse, reflecting its status as a small, high-altitude settlement. The village is organized around the local religious structure, the Church of the Virgin, which remains the central architectural and historical anchor of the area.

While the village is home to a very small permanent population, it continues to serve as an important location for researchers interested in regional history and paleography. Visitors arriving by vehicle should be prepared for mountain driving conditions, as the roads reflect the topographical challenges of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti highlands.
