Village

Cheliaghele

A traditional mountain village in Ambrolauri, Cheliaghele is situated on the Racha Range and features a historic early 20th-century church.

Cheliaghele is a rural settlement situated in the Ambrolauri Municipality within the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region. Positioned on the northern slopes of the Racha Range, it maintains a quiet, traditional character typical of this mountainous region.

Access and Connectivity

The village is located approximately 12 kilometers from the municipal center of Ambrolauri. Access is provided by a secondary road connecting the village to the regional road network. The road infrastructure is generally typical for highland Racha, consisting of paved and gravel sections that follow the mountain terrain. Visitors arriving by car should account for the gradient and narrow sections common to this area, which are manageable by standard vehicles during favorable weather conditions.

Geography and Landscape

Cheliaghele sits at an elevation of approximately 1,190 meters above sea level. The environment is characterized by steep mountain slopes and deep valleys. The village is surrounded by dense deciduous forests, which shift to subalpine meadows at higher altitudes. Due to its position on the Racha Range, the settlement experiences relatively high precipitation and significant seasonal variations, with cool summers and cold, snowy winters.

History and Local Culture

The settlement history of this part of Racha is deeply connected to agrarian life. The village remains primarily an agricultural community, with residents engaged in small-scale animal husbandry and horticulture. The local architectural style historically utilizes stone and wood, adapting to the steep terrain.

The Archangels Church

A notable structure in the village is the Archangels Church, constructed in the early 20th century (1905–1908). It serves as the primary spiritual site for the community. The building follows a traditional design, reflecting the religious practices of the rural Racha population during that period. It remains a focal point for the village's identity.

Economy and Living

The local economy is centered on subsistence farming. The cool mountain climate is suitable for specific varieties of potatoes, cereals, and hardy fruit trees. Livestock breeding, particularly cattle, remains a core activity, and the production of traditional dairy products and local agricultural goods defines the daily life of the residents. While the village is remote, it maintains the fundamental social structures of a Racha community, characterized by close communal ties.
