The village's name is directly linked to the historical fortress standing on its outskirts — Bulbulis Tsikhe (Bulbuli Fortress). In earlier periods, the village was called Tsikhisdziri. In the 18th century, Bulbulistsikhe was one of the main residences of the Kartlian Abashidze family, indicating its political and strategic importance. The fortress here perfectly controlled the surrounding valleys and roads.

The village is located at the headwaters of the Sholi River, 13 kilometers away from Khashuri. The local landscape is rich in deciduous forests and foothill meadows.
