Bortso — A Cozy Haven in High-Mountain Racha

In the Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti region, within the Oni Municipality, lies the village of Bortso. Built at an elevation of 1400 meters above sea level on the southern slope of the Shida-Kedela Range, this settlement is one of the highest and most peaceful villages in the region. Bortso charms visitors with its alpine nature, clean air, and the unhurried rhythm characteristic of mountain villages.

History and Foundation

The village of Bortso is a relatively young settlement. It was founded in the early 1900s by the Chaladze, Gugeshashvili, and Kebadze families. The history of the village is closely tied to the hard work of these families and their desire to create a new home in this beautiful corner of Racha. Even today, Bortso maintains the authenticity established by its founders.

Geography and Nature

The village is located on the left side of the Sakaura River, 12 kilometers away from Oni. The local landscape is rich in alpine meadows and coniferous forests. The climate is typical of the mountains—with cool summers and snowy winters. The surroundings of Bortso create the best conditions for hiking and nature lovers. From here, beautiful views of the Racha ranges open up.

Local Lifestyle

Today, about 20 people live in Bortso. Despite the small population, the village maintains the hospitality characteristic of Racha. The daily life of the locals is closely tied to animal husbandry and small-scale farming. A visit to Bortso allows you to get acquainted with the life of mountain Rachans, taste authentic Rachan products, and relax in complete tranquility, far from urban noise.
