Akhali Khulgumo — Javakheti's Tranquility by Lake Paravani

In the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, within the Ninotsminda Municipality, on the western shore of Georgia's largest lake—Paravani, lies the village of Akhali Khulgumo. This high-mountain settlement is one of the outstanding places in the region, where the harsh but beautiful nature of Javakheti and the mysterious tranquility of the lake merge.

Historical Roots

The history of the village is relatively recent—it was founded in 1924. The settlement was created by residents who moved from the village of Khulgumo in the neighboring Akhalkalaki Municipality, looking for new, fertile pastures and living space. That is why the village was named "Akhali Khulgumo" (New Khulgumo), which emphasizes the connection with its ancient roots.

Geography and Nature

Akhali Khulgumo is built on the Javakheti plateau, at an elevation of over 2000 meters above sea level. The local landscape is a typical alpine zone—treeless, with open fields and mountains of volcanic origin. The climate is harsh—with cool summers and long, snowy winters. The proximity of Lake Paravani gives the village a special attraction and creates the best conditions for photography and ecotourism enthusiasts.

Local Lifestyle

Today, Akhali Khulgumo is a sparsely populated village. The daily life of the locals, according to Javakheti tradition, is closely tied to animal husbandry, which is facilitated by extensive alpine pastures. A visit to Akhali Khulgumo allows you to get acquainted with the life of a real high-mountain village and enjoy the unforgettable views of Lake Paravani.
